When it was under the power of the Venetians, the French and the British, Corfiot culture was influenced a lot. Due to that fact, the first Greek University was found there, the first Philarmonic Orchestra and the first School of Fine Arts. The Old Town of Corfu<\/strong><\/a> has been declared a Unesco World Heritage site. As you pass through its narrow streets so-called ”<\/span>kantounia” you can feel a powerful spell weaving around the atmosphere. That spell originates from its historic monuments and <\/span>Corfus‘ multi-cultural heritage. To discover these sights a walk through the old city of Corfu is just the thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

-Spianada Square (<\/strong><\/span>Espianade)<\/strong>, is the largest square in the Balkans located at the center of Corfu Old Town<\/strong> in front of the old Fortress. It is said that was constructed for defensive reasons from the Venetians, during the 16th and 17th century.<\/span><\/p>\n

-Liston<\/strong> runs along one side of Spianada Square and is the most commonly waked on point of the island, full of stylish cafes.<\/span><\/p>\n

-Old Fortress (Fortezza Vecchia)<\/strong> located at the center of the city and New Fortress (Fortezza Nuova)<\/strong>, constructed on the hill of St. Mark, both built in the 15th century.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Corfu<\/p>\n

-Saint Spyridon Church<\/strong>, the patron saint of Corfu Island. His relics are kept in the church and carried around Corfu Old Town 4 times a year. The reason behind the above is to celebrate his miracles (Palm Sunday, Good Friday, 11th of August and 1st Sunday of November).<\/span><\/p>\n

-The Banknote Museum<\/strong> of the Ionian Bank which exhibits a compilation of Greek coinage from 1822 until nowadays.<\/span><\/p>\n

-Museum of Dionysios Solomos<\/strong>, the National Poet of Greece. It is located in Corfu despite the fact that he was born in Zante 1798. He spent most of his life on the Island of Corfu and died there in 1857. His house was ruined in world war II, at a later time was rebuilt and stands today as a Museum dedicated to his honor.<\/span><\/p>\n

-Archeological Museum<\/strong>, where you can find the archeological finding of the Temple of Artemis and more finds of the ancient city of Corfu.<\/span><\/p>\n

-Museum of Asian Art<\/strong> is the only one of its kind in Greece. After a contribution of 10.500 items by Georgios Manos, the museum was founded in 1927. It is hosted on a neoclassical Georgian-style building, the Palace of Michael and George.<\/span><\/p>\n

-The Serbian Museum of Corfu<\/strong> exposes exhibits of the Serbian soldier’s throughout the world war I. When the Serbian Army and their government were in exile, they found refuge and shelter in Corfu after the attack of the Astro-Hungarian which caused the collapse of the Serbian Front.<\/span><\/p>\n
