The tourist facilities are built next to the site and include a large parking area and a restaurant. Just over 18 kilometres away (about 30 minutes by car), this beautiful 13th-century monastery is built in a cave in the mountain of Kostar. The monastery has played a vital part in the history of Saranda, with the original name of Agi Saranda meaning forty saints in Greek.<\/p>\n<p>During World War II, the monastery was bombed, leaving only the ruins, which you can see today. The excavations of the 6th century AD synagogue during joint venture by the Albanian Academy of Sciences and the Hebrew University Institute of Archaeology.<\/p>\n<p>At the centre of one of the mosaic pavements is a seven-branched candelabrum, flanked by a citron (a fruit similar to a lemon) plus a ram&#8217;s horn \u2013 all symbols associated with the Jewish holidays.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-4374\" src=\"https:\/\/ionianseaways.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ST-GEORGES-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"ST GEORGES\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ionianseaways.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ST-GEORGES-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ionianseaways.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ST-GEORGES-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ionianseaways.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ST-GEORGES-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ionianseaways.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ST-GEORGES-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ionianseaways.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ST-GEORGES-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/ionianseaways.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ST-GEORGES.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>ST GEORGES MONASTERY<br \/>\nThe complex of St George Monastery is located halfway between Saranda and Ksamil. It is about 9 kilometres from Saranda port (about a 2-hour walk or a 20-minute drive).<\/p>\n<p>The monastery is a fortified monastery, with walls, towers and turrets. It houses living quarters, ancillary facilities, and in the centre is the reconstructed church of Saint George from the 14th century.<\/p>\n<p>Offering a beautiful view of the Ionian Sea to the west and Lake Butrint to the east, this Monastery Complex has been declared a cultural monument, a beautiful site to visit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Have you been to any of the sites above?
